WORDS ABOUT PRAYER

Pray first, aim high and stay focused on God.  Live every day one day at a time and remember that only God knows our future and that he will not put you through any more than you can bear.  Do not look to man for your blessings but look to the Lord.   He can open doors for you that only He is able to do.  Doors that you will not slip through but doors that only He has prepared in advance for you in your favor.  Wait, be still and patient: keep God first and everything else will follow.

PASSAGE TO CALM THE TROUBLED SOUL

Psalm 23 The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

THE LORD'S PRAYER

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.  Thy kingdom come.  Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread.   Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.  Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever.  Amen.

SERENITY PRAYER

GOD, grant me the Serenity  to accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can and the Wisdom to know the difference. Living ONE DAY AT A TIME; Enjoying one moment at a time; Accepting hardship as the pathway to peace.  Taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it. Trusting that He will make all things right if I surrender to His Will; That I may be reasonably happy in this life, and supremely happy with Him forever in the next. Amen             By Reinhold Neibuhr

PRAYER OF ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.  Where there is hatred, let me sow love, where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy.  O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved, as to love.  For it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.  –St. Francis of Assisi

PRAYER AGAINST FEAR

My Father, I know fear comes from running away and refusing to face reality.  When I let fear take over, instead of combating it, I keep myself in a state of tension and heartache.  I know freedom is close at hand for me because your Word says that perfect love casts out fear and I trust in your perfect love.   Renouncing fear now, I rest in you at this moment.  You are the Rock that cannot be shaken.  Nothing can hurt me because I am rooted and grounded in “Christ Jesus, my Savior and Lord.  Amen.

PRAYER OF HOPE

Your Holy Spirit has shown me that you raised your Son from the grave.  He is my living Lord, so I will not give up hope even in the most difficult conditions.  My strong Lord is still alive today, so my hope rests on firm ground.  I have heard the liar whispering, but I resolve to stand firm against despairing thoughts, for they lead nowhere except to sadness and more sickness.  Thank you for giving me solid reasons to expect the best.  Like Abraham who against the probabilities continued to hope, I will continue to hope regardless of what happens because my hope is anchored in you!.  Amen.

PRAYER AGAINST BITTERNESS

Solemnly, in your presence, Father, and before the Cross of Christ, I renounce my bitterness and resentment toward _____.  I now receive your love in my heart.  It is enabling me to forgive for what was done to me.  Whether intentional or unintentional, I was hurt and offended.  I stand against those feelings and the thoughts that create and feed my frustrations and anger.  I determine to do battle against bitter thoughts whenever they slip into my consciousness.  With the help of your Holy Spirit, I set _____ free.  And I choose to be free from the destructive powers of resentment and bitterness, in Jesus’ name.  Thank you for the peace and release you give in exchange for my rancor.  Amen.

PRAYER OF PURPOSE

You do nothing without a purpose, and I know you have given me a purpose.  You have preserved my life to love others and to share Christ, hope, and joy with them.  I firmly adopt your purpose for me and declare that I am here to love others and to show your love, no matter what my condition is right now.

PRAYER OF PRAISE

I believe – no because I feel but because your Word says – my song is a song of praise.  Therefore I will praise you as long as I live, when I feel good and when I feel bad, when I think all is well and when I think nothing is,  when I am frustrated and when I am encouraged, when I see no answers and when every wish is fulfilled.  All because you dwell in the midst of the praises of your people.

PRAYER FOR GOD'S WILL

Nothing is higher or better than your will, because you want the best for your children.  Whatever you are allowing to happen right now, I know you want only the best for me.  Since I may not know what is best, I join my will with yours.  And wanting your will for me, I pray your own prayer:  Your will be done, Father, here in me as it is in heaven.

PRAYER OF COMMITMENT

Dear God, Through your power and strength please help me live MY COMMITMENT AS A CHRISTIAN today.  I'm part of the fellowship of the unashamed and have stepped over the line.   Having made the decision to be a disciple of Jesus Christ I recognize that this and every day You give me the power to not look back, let up, slow down, back away, or be still.   My past is redeemed, my present makes sense, and my future is secure.  May I always remember and especially today focus on you and live in your love so that I'm finished and done with low living, sight walking, small planning, smooth knees, colorless dreams, tamed visions, mundane talking, cheap living, and dwarfed goals.  Please forgive the times when I don’t lean on your strength, learn from your Word, and accomplish Your goals.  Through your grace I no longer need preeminence, prosperity, position, promotions, plaudits, or popularity nor do I have to be right, first, tops, recognized, praised, regarded, or rewarded.   What glory in knowing that I can live by faith, lean on Your presence, walk by patience, lift by prayer, and labor by power.  Such peace comes from living and knowing my face is set, my gait is fast, my goal is heaven, my road is narrow, my way rough, my companions few, my Guide reliable, my mission clear.   Through and because of your love I cannot be bought, deluded, or delayed and with your power I will not flinch in the face of sacrifice, hesitate in the presence of the adversary, negotiate at the table of the enemy, or meander in the maze of mediocrity.   Thank you for all the abundant and glorious blessings you bestow on us and especially that you give me daily and long term strength to not give up, shut up, let up, until I have stayed up, stored up, prayed up, paid up, and preached up for the cause of Christ.  I am a disciple of Jesus and with humble praise to You I must go till He comes, give till I drop, preach till all know, and work till He stops me.  When He comes for His own, He will have no problem recognizing me because my banner will be clearly Your awesome banner of love!  Amen.

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

Dear Lord, I thank You for this day. I thank You for my being able to see and to hear this morning. I'm blessed because You are a forgiving God and an understanding God. You have done so much for me and You keep on blessing me. Forgive me this day for everything I have done, said or thought that was not pleasing to you. I ask now for Your forgiveness.  Please keep me safe from all danger and harm. Help me to start this day with a new attitude and plenty of gratitude. Let me make the best of each and every day to clear my mind so that I can hear from You. Please broaden my mind that I can accept all things. Let me not whine and whimper over things I have no control over. Let me continue to see sin through Your eyes and acknowledge it as evil. And when I sin, let me repent, and confess with my mouth my wrongdoing, and receive the Your forgiveness.  And when this world closes in on me, let me remember Jesus' example to slip away and find a quiet place to pray. It's the best response when I'm pushed beyond my limits. I know that when I can't pray, You listen to my heart. Continue to use me to do your will. Continue to bless me that I may be a blessing to others. Keep me strong that I may help the weak. Keep me uplifted that I may have words of encouragement for others.  I pray for those that are lost and can't find their way. I pray for those that are misjudged and misunderstood. I pray for those who don't know You intimately. I pray for those that will delete this without sharing it with others. I pray for those that don't believe. But I thank you that I believe. I believe that God changes people and God changes things. I pray for all my sisters and brothers. For each and every family member in their households. I pray for peace, love and joy in their homes that they are out of debt and all their needs are met. There is no problem, circumstance, or situation greater than You, God.  Every battle is in Your hands for You to fight.  This is my prayer. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

PRAYER FOR WHOLENESS

[The following paraphrases a prayer attributed to St. Francis of Assisi.]

Gracious, loving, caring God,

Source of all healing and wholeness,

Make us instruments of Your healing.

When we are weak and in pain, help us to rest;

When we are anxious, help us to wait patiently;

When we are fearful, help us to trust in You;

When we are lonely, help us to love;

When we place You apart from us, help us to know that you are still near.

Healing God, grant us not so much to demand everything from ourselves, as to allow others to help us;

Grant us not so much to seek escape, as to face ourselves and to learn the depths of Your love.

For it is in being uncertain and not in control that we find true faith;

In knowing the limits of mind and body that we find wholeness of spirit;

In passing through death that we find life that lasts forever.

In the name of Christ Jesus, our Savior, our Healer, our Lord, we offer ourselves to You. Amen.

THE FIVE FINGER PRAYER

1. Your thumb is nearest to you. So begin your prayers by praying for those closest to you. They are the easiest to remember. To pray for our loved ones is, as C. S. Lewis once said, a "sweet duty."

 2. The next finger is the pointing finger. Pray for those who teach, instruct and heal. This includes teachers, doctors, and ministers. They need support and wisdom in pointing others in the right direction.  Keep them in your prayers.

3. The next finger is the tallest finger. It reminds us of our leaders. Pray for the president, leaders in business and industry, and administrators.  These people shape our nation and guide public opinion. They need God's guidance.  Also include our servicemen and women here and abroad who always stand tall in the duty of defending and protecting our nation. They need God's strength and comfort.

4. The fourth finger is our ring finger. Surprising to many is the fact that this is our weakest finger; as any piano teacher will testify. It should remind us to pray for those who are weak, in trouble or in pain. They need your prayers day and night. You cannot pray too much for them.

 5. And lastly comes our little finger; the smallest finger of all. Which is where we should place ourselves in relation to God and others.  As the Bible says, "The least shall be the greatest among you." Your pinkie should remind you to pray for yourself. By the time you have prayed for the other four groups, your own needs will be put into proper perspective and you will be able to pray for yourself more effectively.
